Shape generation for design
Proposition for a postdoctoral study in computer science
- Opened on October 1st, starting ASAP
- Please contact : jean-francois.omhover@ensam.eu
- Tel : +33144246265
- Mobile : +33614033456
◈ Context
The research project called “genius” (http://www.genius-anr.org founded
by the french research agency) aims at the elaboration of an intelligent system
that would support the activity of the designers in the early phases of the design process.
This system incorporates machine learning algorithms that will categorize information
related to products (semantic adjectives, low level features) and help the designer
generate shapes (shape grammars, shape descriptors, genetic algorithms).
◈ Objective of the postdoctoral study
The postdoc will aim at the elaboration of the shape generation algorithm.
We have already defined several directions for that : first, a family of shape descriptors
has been identified, and an overall G.A. approach has been investigated to support
the design iterations; second, a specification of the inputs and outputs of the algorithm
has been roughly defined, also with the different parameters that would help the user
obtain relevant results ; finally, an interface has been drawn, and a first database
obtained, to show what kind of results need to be obtained and how.
The objective is now to develop the algorithm itself, using the shape descriptors
investigated and proposing solutions for derivating and crossing shaped
within the system.
◈ Requirements
PhD in computer science (artificial intelligence), skills in machine learning,
genetic algorithms, image processing, development (Java, C++)
◈ Team
Arts et Métiers ParisTech is a famous engineeering school located in Paris, France.
It integrates several research laboratories on different areas (mechanics, materials,
engineering design, design science, etc.). It hosts approximatively 1000 engineer
students per year. Link : http://www.ensam.fr
The Product Design and Innovation Laboratory (LCPI) is a multidisciplinary team,
composed of several experts of the design process and its optimisation: ergonomics,
design, quality, maintainance, software, artificial intelligence, etc. The postdoc will be
integrated in the genius project, and confronted to different point of views. The team is
composed of approximatively 15 permanent researchers and 20 doctorate students
(some of them are foreign students).
◈ Location :
Arts et Métiers ParisTech
Laboratoire CPI
151 boulevard de l’Hopital
75013 Paris
◈ Duration : 1 year
◈ Salary : to be discussed
